Raval is home to many expats, bohemians, hippies, artists and of course its old time inhabitants, that as of yet have not been seduced by the new housing estates further fom the city center. Raval as a neighbourhood has many faces. Many people feel uncomfortable walking through Raval, whereas others feel at home with the raw bohemian and artistic vibes.

The Raval has historically gone through hard times, and once upon a time was recognised as the most densely populated area in Europe. It held the most infamous reputation too, as home to prostitutes, drug merchants, illegal bars and illegal immigrants. This reputation persists, but not nearly on the same scale as in earlier times. Today much of the area has changed enormously. It still has an industrial flavour, but its surviving industry consists of small old-fashioned workshops in trades like printing, furniture or building supplies. Raval offers some of the best bars and restaurants in Barcelona, for those looking for the special and unusual places to enjoy in the city. Raval is certainly cleaning up, this started during the Olympic games in 1992, and some of the most important architects of Barcelona are working on some big projecst like luxury Hotels, esplanades etc. in the area to and make less dense and sinister.
