Raval today makes home for many foreign expats, Bohemians, hippies, artists and of course many of its old time habitants, that as of yet have not been moved out to the new housing estates after speculants setting up new modern buildings in the area, forcing plenty of families to move out of their homes from generations.
Raval has a very varied face to its neighbourhood.
Many people feel very uncomfortable walking through Raval, where of others feel that there is a real Bohemian and artist vibe in the place.

The Raval has historically gone through its hard times and once upon a time recognised as the most densely populated area in Europe. It held the most infamous name to it, making homes for prostitutes, drug merchants, illegal bars and illegal immigrants.
This until today does exist but not nearly on the same scale as in its earlier days. Today much of the area has changed enormously. It still has an industrial flavour, but its surviving industry consists of small old-fashioned workshops in trades like printing, furniture or building supplies.
Raval offers some of the best bars and restaurants in Barcelona, for those looking for the special and ordinary place.
Raval is certainly going through a big clean up project which already started during the Olympic games in 1992, and some of the most important architects of Barcelona are working on some big project like luxury Hotels, esplanades etc. to open the area up and make it more airy and less dense.
