Correfoc (The firerun)

The Correfoc is one of the most popular events of La Merce festival, Barcelona´s biggest street party which happens every year in September. The legend of Correfoc is that the  Mascle Cabró, or ram in English - hears the arrival of the "diables" the devils,  and commands his armies to cross the gate of hell called "Porta de l´Infern" which separates the real world from hell. 

At the end of the Correfoc the devils are sent back into hell. The Correfoc starts with "ceptrotada", a dance for the devil by one member from each Correfoc group. Then there are fireworks at the "Porta de l´Infern " - "Gates of Hell," which open and release the "diables" to start the "Correfoc"  firerun. During the firefun or ´Correfoc´, around 40 groups of ´Colles de diables´ or groups of devils comprising of drum players, dragons and other fire beasts take to Via Laietana in the centre of Barcelona for this spectacular event. 

During the fire run people can watch the fireworks from the side of Via Laeitana, or from their apartment balconies on the street, or if you are braver you can get involved and join the parade of fire beasts which shoot off fireworks in every direction. Is it advisable to wear clothing to cover the skin for this. There is also a Correfoc for children the same day at 18:30 and many Correfoc activities and workshops all day. 2011 was the 25th anniversary of the organisation "Coordinadora de Colles de Diables de Barcelona”. In total the Correfoc normally receives around 70, 000 visitors and it is well worth a trip!
